How did all this "luck" stuff come to me? I met a nice woman with dark eyes and a kind smile at an ecademy networking event who invited me back for tea and a chat. Over a steaming cup of hot water (my tipple nowadays) I mentioned I was a great believer in being lucky when she immediately left the room.........and came back holding Dr Richard Wiseman`s "The Luck Factor" - a well researched and documented study of what makes people lucky and how to cultivate a lucky attitude in life.
Back in the 80s, I had been very involved in self improvement - therapy, self development, the lot - and immediately found someone I loved, got married and pregnant soon after. Everything I read in this book "The Luck Factor" made utter sense and I realised that I am an immensely lucky person.
Sharon (the woman at the networking event) and I talked over the phone this evening. We were talking of one of the keys to generating luck for ourselves - goal setting. She doesn`t like getting her clients (OK, OK I`ll come clean, we`re both coaches!) to be too specific about their vision. I generally like to do the live it, breathe it, smell it, taste it stuff, though I also encourage my guys to do what Shakti Gawain says in her book "Positive Visualisation": after you have actualised your picture and have done a virtual tour of it, then you put it in a pink bubble ( though let`s not be too specific about the colour!) and allow it to float away. Just let it go. The Universe will take it and then has the chance to give it back to you in reality.
I use the analogy of child rearing for idea rearing. There are 2 challenges facing any parent. First as a good-enough parent (thank you, Bettelheim), you nurture your child, tenderly protect and love your child and get to know them intimately. So you do with your idea or vision for the future.
Then gradually as your child is growing and changing thanks to your love and cherishing, so you step back and allow your child to develop their independence. This is true of your idea or vision. Your challenge as a parent or a visioning person is to manage both the bonding and the letting go.
And to make that vision real, you need to develop a relaxed awareness to be able to spot the chance opportunities as and when they happen. And that`s something for another night!
Love
Sarah
