Some more 'literally's........

A few more choice examples of the misuse of 'literally', as I promised.

James tells me that he watched a programme on recycling on TV when he heard the reporter say,     " Britain`s waste problem has been literally swept under the carpet!" The other choice morsel was heard on local radio as a traffic report, "The traffic is literally sailing through!"

The Power Of Words.....

We were driving down the M25 when we came round to a discussion of use of the word "literally". 'We' were my ex-husband Robert, my son James and me (plus Sooty the family dog). We were all going to the funeral of Robert`s dad - a sad occasion though a great relief from suffering. We were passing the time it takes to get down to Dymchurch in Kent with chat on things that could make us laugh.

Anyhow, James and his dad make a collection of the number of times that the word "literally" gets used incorrectly in the media, particularly on radio. He gave me three peachy examples which had me falling about and I now relate them to you (with James`s permission) Read on>>>

Lucky Sir Alan?

Sir Alan Sugar (founder of Amstrad and star of UK`s "The Apprentice") doesn`t believe in luck, just hard work...... Hmm.

I expect you, my dear readers work hard too - but do you earn the vast amounts he does?? No, I thought not. And as you have been reading these columns over the last few months, you will know by now that luck isn`t just a matter of "luck". According to a study done by the University of Herefordshire, there are some distinct characteristics that make up a lucky person. See whether you fit the bill....................Read on >>>

Take Control Of Your Time!

A friend of mine, Beverley Hamilton has just written an excellent ebook,"Take Control Of Your Time: 7 Straight Shooter Strategies For Success!" which you can find on her website www.onestepfurther.com .

It`s a practical, down-to-earth, sock-it-to-`em manual on how to organise your time to make the most of it. It`s really three books in one, in that she not only explains the theory, she also gives a useful workbook and resources to help you really get your life into some semblance of order. She gives handy tips such as..........Read on>>>

"Harry Potter and The Luck Accelerator!"

In our family there`s a routine we follow every time a new Harry Potter comes out. James (17) reads it first, then me because I read very quickly, then his dad. James has made the observation that any child under 10 would be too young to read the latest book. "Too dark, it`s too dark for them," he decided. Read on>>>>

Happy-Go-Lucky!

Wow what beautiful weather we`re having at the moment. It was a trifle humid over the weekend and now it has calmed to bright, clear, fresh and sunny days. It`s amazing how smiley people get in the sunshine, have you noticed? My body relaxes and opens up to welcome the warmth. Mind you, you can`t help but smile when you squint into the light!

I found out the other day that when you smile, you produce serotonin, a 'feel good' hormone, even if that smile is false to begin with. So the more you smile, the more good you feel! Putting on a happy face is a good idea, then to help you become happier. And luckier too according to the following.

A few days ago, my friend Steve sent me this: -

"Tomorrow (18 June) is the 190th anniversary of the battle of Waterloo, at which Napoleon’s dream was finally ended. There is no doubt that he was one of history’s greats. And when appointing his senior Generals, he asked “Est-il hereux?” which translates as “Is he Lucky”. Interesting that the literal translation is “Is he Happy?” Napoleon and many others have noted the connection between Happiness and Luck (our own phrase, “Happy –go- Lucky”, may come from this, I don’t know).

Message: To increase your Luck, increase your Happiness"

The person who wrote this is called Phil Olley - and if anyone knows who he is, please let me know how to contact him to say thank you. I was really fascinated that Napoleon realised that you can have all the talent and ability in the world though if you don`t apply it with a happy belief in a positive outcome, you aren`t likely to be successful.

This morning as the sun streamed through my bedroom window, I was smiling reading "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" once more. A challenging and gloriously entertaining book on acquiring a rich mentality. How lucky is that - to be reading about getting rich in bed on a beautiful morning!
